We will be forever grateful for the 110 members who left the mother church, Antioch Baptist Church, and started the Light Bread Church in 1890, under the leadership of Morris Boone. In 1891 thirty-one converts stepped forward to join them. From 1892-1905, Henry R. Flynn served as pastor. From 1905-1939, Luke Allen Jr. served and many auxiliaries were organized, such as the Usher Board, Young Men's Mission Board, the Inspirational Choir, the Male Chorus, Deacon Board, Sunday School and BYPU, Junior Choir, Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops, Circle Leaders and the Volunteer Club.
Henry Allen, (the nephew of Luke Allen Jr.) was called to pastor from 1939-1947. Under his leadership the Mother’s Union was organized.
On October 12, 1947 Dr. Lawrence Daniel Scott was called to be the fifth pastor of the Avenue Baptist Church. He came to Avenue from Bienville Parish and was a much sought-after speaker throughout the city and state. Under his leadership, Avenue renovated, remodeled, burned the mortgage note, installed outdoor chime and organized the Victory Choir and Junior Usher Board.
During L. D. Scott’s forty-six years as pastor, many church improvements and ministries were organized, such as: the Youth Basketball Team, Junior Mission, Ave News Bulletin and the LDS (Little Divine Souls) choir, in addition to being the first black church to have radio broadcast services. In 1990 Avenue celebrated 100 years with a centennial parade, banquet, journal of memories and presentation of the official Avenue Commemorative Coin Key Chain. Reverend Scott retired in 1993. From 1993-94, Jordan “Chuck” Edwards served as Interim Pastor.
In August 1994, Clarence L. Hicks, Sr. was called to be the sixth pastor of Avenue Baptist Church. He challenged members to accept “A Call to Change and a New Vision”. Under the leadership of Pastor Hicks, the church has grown spiritually, numerically and financially, with new ministries, bible study classes, community outreach programs and after school tutoring classes. The challenging legacy of Avenue is one we celebrate.
Also, under the leadership and vision of Pastor Hicks, the church voted to bid on another facility, which is located at 901
West 70th St. In March of 2008 the church voted to purchase the facility and in April of 2008 our offer to purchase the facility was accepted. The papers were signed in May of 2008 legalizing the purchase of the new site and our first note was paid in July of 2008.
Several new ministries have been added including: Firm Foundation Ministry, which is a ministry to mentor boys and young men. Avenue Angels Ministry, which is a ministry to mentor girls and young women, also Two Becoming One, which is a ministry taught by Pastor Hicks that teaches biblical principles for dating and marriage.
On February 14, 2010, Youth and Children's Church was initiated. It is currently held the first Sunday of each month, at 11:00a.m. The purpose and goal of children's church is to make Christian disciples through teaching and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ on a level that a child can understand.
With a visionary pastor, Avenue will reverently work to carry out its mission with a ready and willing congregation.
